If you like keeping up with the latest technology and need a new battery for your car or powersports vehicle, you may want to consider upgrading to an AGM battery.
We’ve put together some of the most important information you need to know.
What’s an AGM battery?
An AGM battery is a type of deep-cycle lead-acid battery designed to provide optimal performance. Instead of having acid floating freely inside like a conventional flooded battery, they contain a thin fibreglass mat that absorbs the battery's acid and prevents it from evaporating. This construction allows AGM batteries to provide consistent power over long periods of time.
Flooded Battery vs. AGM Battery
Flooded batteries have been the gold standard for years because they’re affordable and widely available. However, AGM batteries have recently taken over the market as electrical demands have increased in new cars. Although they’re more expensive, they have several advantages over conventional flooded batteries, such as:
They don’t require any maintenance and can withstand shaking and vibration
They’re spill-proof and can be tipped over or installed on their side without leaking
They have a low self-discharge rate and can sit unused for long periods of time
They charge quickly, which makes them great for short, repetitive trips
They have a long lifespan and can start an engine more than 60,000 times
They have high-quality cold-cranking amps, which makes them reliable in cold temperatures
AGM batteries are well-suited for cars with numerous plug-in accessories and electronic features such as DVD players, LCD screens, GPS and heated seats. In addition, they’re great for newer, more fuel-efficient cars with start-stop technology since they can withstand more stress than a conventional flooded battery.

How To Charge An AGM Battery
Traditional battery chargers aren’t suitable for AGM batteries because they can’t detect when the battery is overcharged or undercharged. AGM batteries must be fully charged to maintain their capacity. If you only partially recharge an AGM battery, it may lose its ability to fully recharge. Similarly, overcharging an AGM battery may cause the cells to overheat, damaging the battery and reducing its lifespan.
